Blessing of the water

Second Sunday after Christmas.

Wisdom, who comes to live in Israel, is the image of the Word of God who becomes man.

The evangelist John in his “Prologue” presents the Word, Son of the Father, who becomes one of us. He is the light and life of the world, so that men may know God and have divine life.

We must welcome Him with willingness, let ourselves be enlightened by Him and, as St. Paul says, be holy, live by faith and love, awaiting His full manifestation.

During the pre-festive Holy Mass of the Epiphany on Sunday, January 5 (6:00 p.m.), the traditional blessing of the water will be perpetuated, popularly called the “Baptism of Jesus”: it is an ancient rite that has its roots in the Christian East where, in a single liturgy, Jesus and his revelation as the Son of the Most High are celebrated before the Magi, at the Jordan River and at the wedding at Cana.

At the end of the service, the Basilica will host the representation of the Nativity and the Adoration of the Magi, curated by the Association “Insieme per…”.
